Let's face it - most musical 'performances' you hear on records and radio are fake. Built track by track, snippet by snippet out of dozens of repetitive individual performances, and subsequently processed, botoxed, and CGI'ed until perfection. Or hammered into submission, if you prefer. We decided to take a more honest path in recording this debut album: five people, a bunch of good microphones and a studio that has been around since 1942 and has seen the likes of Piaf, Trenet, The Rolling Stones… the list goes on for a bit.

We recorded as much as we could in three days, and played take after take of each song until we felt the vibe was good, or that it had left the building (after take three or four, in our case). The original idea was to keep our recorded sounds sparse and real - to record our music as pure as possible. But, to quote the eminent philosopher P.W. Herman, "everyone has a big but"...

From the beginning of the band, there were always a number of sounds and textures floating around in our heads and subsequently on demo recordings amassed through the years. So the elephant in the room was: do we release a sparse debut album, approximating the Bellemont quintet live sound? Or throw in extra aural layers to provide a rich, textured experience? Discussions, heated arguments, pleas and promises ensued.

In the end, we decided to go full out on the debut album that you now hold in your hands: one disc containing the as-we-played-them recordings with every breath, crackle and pop left intact - and one disc using the exact same recordings… but with full production values, structural edits, adapted instrumentation and voices, and bits of plain old voodoo we still haven’t figured out ourselves.

It is now up to the listener to build his own Bellemont experience: some songs might be preferred in the sparse version, some in the enhanced style - or maybe a version will grow on you as time passes?
